Laptop Upgrade

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I decided to experiment with the cutting edge development version of Ubuntu, feisty fawn by installing it on my laptop. It didn’t go to well at all! The updater bottomed out in style so I tried to use sudo to gain root privileges and it segfaulted. Oh noes with no way to gain root and all my applications segfaulting I rebooted, surprise surprise it refused to boot. Oh well… at least I have that USB IDE 2.5″ enclosure so I can backup the few bits of data I need. But now I got to apply all the tweaks I applied, sigh.

SVN RSS Feeds

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

How does one go about making a RSS feed from subversion change logs? I asked myself this very question earlier today, and set out to seek an answer. I found points of interest here, and here.

Eventually though I came across an XSLT stylesheet for the output of svn --log --xml which transforms it into RSS 2.0 bingo! I found the stylesheet from this blog.

I munged it all together into a PHP script and hey presto, I was laughing. For anyone that is interested here is the feed.

MySQL Quick Admin

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Its hard to deny that phpMyAdmin is a little slow (being generous) this annoys me when I just want to make a quick change to something in a configuration table and I have to wait 30 seconds for it to output the page. I have found the solution in the form of MySQL Quick Admin, it is very fast, lean and clean. It has so far not failed to impress, it doesn’t have the power of phpMyAdmin but it is far cleaner and quicker to output pages.

Ella

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

As I said earlier I have upgraded my blog here to Wordpress 2.1, codenamed ‘Ella’, and I am impressed by the improvements. The categories hierarchy makes sense, I have added a few more categories in to neaten it out a bit which makes it more manageable, and look better on the index. The draft saving feature has not saved me yet, but it does appear to be saving, lousy pun I know!

Very Pleased :D

Moved

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Boo … just in case you didn’t noticed my blog has moved to my own domain cs278.org, I have a Dreamhost plan which I am going to be using for remote backups and web hosting. I will continue to run my mail from home, I need to sort that out soon.

Other minor thing, welcome in Wordpress 2.1!

Being sued

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Yup, I am being sued for damages etc. along with the 14 000 other students here at the University of Exeter who are member of the Student’s Guild. Somebody from the Evangelical Christian Union have filed papers at the Hight Court against the members Guild, the Guild president and the University. Should be interesting.
